According to the residents, after a series of protests against the ONGC’s move to extract hydrocarbon through wells dug up in their farm fields across the region, the Collector, who met the protesting residents several times, gave a written assurance that the ONGC would be prevented from drilling further wells and the existing ones would be removed by December 2017. The decision was reportedly made after advice from the state government during a peace meeting convened by the Collector on March 25, 2017.

The Collector had further stressed that the ONGC would be reportedly asked to withdraw from the region after nine months and the land would be handed back to the owners. But, even after a lapse of one month after the deadline, the Collector had failed to keep up his words, the residents fumed.
