Gold worth Rs 72L seized at airport

Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the customs department on Saturday seized smuggled gold worth Rs 72 lakh from five passengers at the Tiruchy International Airport (TIA).

Of the five arrested passengers, four arrived from Kuala Lumpur and one came on the Singapore flight. The first passenger was identified as Mohamed Rafiyudeen, a resident of Nagapattinam. According to officials, Mohamed who came from Kuala Lumpur was carrying about 599 grams worth Rs 18 lakh. The gold seized from him was concealed in an electric converter. 

Similarly, another passenger from Kuala Lumpur, Faizal Khan was also caught red-handed with 465 grams worth Rs 14 lakhs. The gold seized from Khan was in the form of a gold foil and about 88 thin gold foils were seized from him. The third passenger, Borudeen Ali was carrying about 488 grams and fourth passenger Mohamed Ashique was smuggling about 466 grams of the yellow metal. The three passengers, Faizal Khan, Borudeen Ali and Mohamed Ashique, were hiding the gold foil inside a mobile battery.  The fifth passenger, who arrived from Singapore, was hiding the gold inside a cutlery set. The passenger was identified as Prasanth Arockiam, a resident of Sivagangai. He was carrying about 363 grams worth Rs 11 lakhs, concealed as thin gold rods.
