Shahul Hameed, from Mettupalayam, was caught after a chase, when he fled after snatching the handbag of a woman riding pillion on a bike. The PUCL has sought a CB-CID inquiry into the incident alleging that it was a case of custodial torture.

Pon Chandran, joint secretary of PUCL, said on Tuesday that a case should be filed under IPC section 176 (1A) for custodial death and investigated by the CB-CID. Refusing police claim that Shahul suffered injuries after falling from the vehicle when he was caught by the public, Pon Chandran said he was handed over to police without any injuries.
