62 minors saved from marriage last year
Childline 1098 in Tiruchy has stopped as many as 62 child marriages and rescued 15 child labourers and six from beggary from April 2017 to January 2018, said J Godwin Prem Singh, director of Childline Nodal Agency here on Saturday.

Also, after releasing the annual report of Childline 1098, Prem Singh said that the toll-free number 1098 received 610 calls during the period, based on which 124 cases were registered, including nine sexual abuse cases.
“We need to concentrate on creating awareness among parents in the rural pockets of the district,” he said. He also stated that the Childline has initiated steps to sensitise parents in rural areas through anganwadi workers, as they would know the details of the children in the respective villages.
While speaking, S Thiyagarajan, city coordinator of Childline Nodal Agency, said that child marriages were more prevalent in the blocks like Vaiyampatti, Marungapuri, and Manaparrai this year. “Last year it was Thuraiyur, Uppliyapuram, and Thathaiyangarpet,” he added.
