‘Keep Sagarmala illusion away from Kanniyakumari’

A delegation of fisherfolk and farmers from Kanniyakumari toured Ennore on Tuesday to verify the truth behind the claims that the Sagarmala scheme, under which an international container port is to be built in Kanniyakumari-Kovalam-Manakudi, would bring development, prosperity and jobs to the southern-most district.

VOC Port’s proposal to construct a port for containers and bulk cargo has been a matter of concern for the local public. “Ennore is Tamil Nadu’s foremost example of a Sagarmala scheme in action, with the Kamarajar Port and the cluster of power plants as the engines of development. Our visit to Ennore, our own observations of the state of the environment, and our interactions with local communities have convinced us that the proposal will not be good for our region,” said S Irundhayam, who represented the fisherfolk.

R Parthasarathy, farmer from Muhilankudiyiruppu in Kanniyakumari, said that their agrarian village was just a kilometre from the proposed site. “In Ennore, the port was supposed to bring about development and jobs. But the people here said their livelihoods were at threat. We don’t want Kanniyakumari to face a similar situation,” he said.
