This year, the Directorate of Government Examinations have setup 278 additional exam centres, including 10 in Chennai, in order to help the students by reducing the distance between their residence and exam venues.
This was helpful for the candidates, mainly those who reside in villages, by reducing the travel time. There now are a total of 2,794 exam centres in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry this year.
"It is a good initiative by the government. The students need not travel too long for writing the exams," PK Illamaran, State president, Tamil Nadu Teacher's Association. "Some students in remote areas travelled more than 10 kilometres to reach the exam venue last year," he added.
There were also instances where a single school had two centres. In 2017, Syed Ammal Higher Secondary School in Ramanthapuram had a single exam centre. But this year, government has added another centre in the same school. The number of centres increased but no new venues were added in this case.
