According to locals who rescued the baby, she was found in a sack on the Kovilpatti-Sankarankovil road, in the morning. They said they were shocked to see that the baby still had its umbilical cord.
The locals informed the Nalattinputhur Police and with their help, the baby was taken to the Kovilpatti Government Hospital. Hospital sources said the baby was healthy and that she could have been abandoned less than five hours after her birth.
The baby was under intensive care and will be under observation for a couple of days before she is handed over to the government’s cradle baby scheme centre. Some villagers asked the police whether they can adopt the baby, but the policemen told them it was illegal and asked those interested to register with the district child protection unit and adopt through the proper channel.
Meanwhile, Swathi (4) of Theni, who went to Rameswaram on a pilgrimage, went missing after her family visited ‘Ramar Foot’ in the temple town. When the family was searching for the girl in Thittakudi, near Rameswaram, a police constable, Marimuthu, attached to the Special Branch, saw the girl crying and took her with him on his bike. On the way to the police station, he saw her family and after inquiry, handed over Swathi to them.
