According to Madurai SP, N Manivannan, the incident happened at around 4.30 pm when police team, attached to Sellur police dressed in civil clothes, surrounded a house in Sikkender Chavadi and tried to barge inside the house.

The two men inside the house, Saguni Karthick alias Karthick (28) and Muthu Irulandi (29), both from Keerathurai in Madurai, tried to attack the policemen with a pistol. In order to protect themselves the police shot at the accused and both sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot. The Madurai SP said that only two bullets were fired at the accused, one each from two policemen. Later the bodies were taken to Madurai GRH added the SP.

Manivannan also said that they had close to 20 cases against them. Based on a tip off, Sellur police came in search of them because of their involvement in a murder case in 2015 within their station limit.

However, police sources present at the location revealed that there were five people inside the house when the police surrounded them. The main target was Mayakannan, the kingpin of the gang and has several cases pending against him.

On knowing that police had surrounded them, Mayakannan managed to escape and in the process sustained severe injuries. However, two more people, Ravi, and wife of Mayakannan, were secured by police team and have been taken under police custody. Ravi would be officially arrested on Friday, added sources.

This version of incidents was also supported by the neighbours. One of the neighbours, seeking anonymity, said that there was no sound of shooting in the house and that it might have been a close-range shot. Policemen had surrounded the house earlier and had even warned the neighbours to close their doors. They realised that there is something wrong but did not expect any encounter, added the neighbour.
