Police nab 5 men, recover jewellery worth Rs 61 lakh

With the arrest, jewellery worth Rs 55 lakh have been retrieved and investigation is underway to find the rest.

The city police arrested five people for stealing 752 grams of gold and diamond jewels worth over Rs 61 lakh from a wholesale jewellery manufacturing firm in Coimbatore. 

According to the police, 42-year-old Baskaran, a resident of Selvapuram, was mastermind behind the theft. He had stolen jewels from RKR Gold Private Ltd at RS Puram where he was employed for over a year. 

“A few days ago, his boss entrusted him with the job of selling jewels in bulk to clients in districts across Tamil Nadu. Later, it was found that a large number of jewellery were missing from his bag,” a police officer said. 

Based on a complaint, the RS Puram police registered a case and found out that Baskaran took the jewels and shared it with four goldsmiths from Coimbatore. The other accused have been identified as Anandan, 38, Thangavel, 41, Roopan, 25 and Abbas, 35, all from Coimbatore. 

The police retrieved 661 grams of gold and diamond worth Rs 55 lakh and investigation is underway to find the rest of the jewellery.
