Traffic inspector Kamaraj, who chased the couple to apprehend the husband who was not wearing a helmet, kicked the two-wheeler and in the impact, the wife fell off the vehicle. A Maruti Omni van coming from behind ran over the woman and she died on the spot. He was arrested later in the evening and suspended.
Police were conducting intensive checks on compulsory wearing of helmet near the Ganesha roundabout in Tiruverumbur. Raja (34) from Choolamangalam near Ayyampettai in Thanjavur was taking his wife Usha (30) to a hospital in the city for a periodical check-up.
Since the couple was in a hurry, sources said Raja did not notice the vehicle check nor the police warning and did not stop the vehicle.
However, Kamaraj who took a two- wheeler and reportedly chased them, kicked their vehicle. Raja lost control of his two-wheeler and the couple fell on the road. Just then a Maruti Omni van coming from behind ran over Usha. Raja sustained severe injuries.
On information, locals gathered near the roundabout and staged a protest condemning the police action. Kamaraj had initially escaped from the spot.
Usha was taken to the Thuvakudi GH while her husband Raja was rushed to a private hospital in the city.
