Inspector kicked my wife thrice, I lost control and fell: Raja

Raja said that on the day of the incident, the two were on their way to the hospital for a check-up and were also going to attend Usha’s friend’s reception. 

The gift box containing a wet mixer grinder, was placed on the bike’s tank. 

“As soon as we reached Thuvakudi Toll plaza, the police who were conducting checks for wearing helmets asked me to stop the bike since I was not wearing one. I stopped my vehicle at a distance and soon Inspector Kamaraj came towards me. While he admonished me, another cop came along and asked me to proceed. While I drove on, Kamaraj got onto his two-wheeler and pursued us. As he neared my bike, he kicked my wife on her thigh. Despite my protests, he continued doing so. At the third blow, I lost control and we both fell on the road. Usha was immediately run over and died on the spot,” a devastated Raja said.

He called it premeditated murder and demanded a case under IPC Section 302 be registered against Kamaraj. “As of now, he will easily come out on bail. Will he return my wife?,” Raja asked. The couple fell in love while studying social work in Bharathidasan University and got married on January 24, 2015. 

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Thursday issued notice to the Tamil Nadu government seeking a detailed report on the Tiruchy incident.  

Terming it the worst example of police brutality, the Commission, which took suo motu cognizance of media reports, asked the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police to file full details on the action taken against the ‘delinquent’ police officer and relief granted to the family of the deceased. 

They also wanted reports on the husband’s health and the medical treatment being provided to him. While issuing the notice, the Commission further observed that the police force is meant to enforce the law and protect the people, but frenzied actions while trying to exercise their power leads to unfortunate incidents.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Thursday said criminal investigation has been ordered into the case and announced Rs 7 lakh solatium to the kin of the deceased.
