The deceased were identified as R Pasupathi (35), the driver for the ambulance belonging to a private hospital, and his two friends, Rajesh and Sakthivel, who were travelling along with him in the vehicle at the time of the accident.

Police said Pasupathi used to halt the ambulance at a particular location on L&T Bypass Road. On Monday, Pasupathy was returning to his regular halting spot with Rajesh. Sakthivel, a security personnel at the toll gate, had joined the duo in the vehicle midway.

While they were nearing Athapagoundenpudur, a container lorry transporting a load of fish, coming in the opposite direction collided with their vehicle.

In the impact of the collision, Pasupathi and Rajesh were killed on the spot, while Sakthivel succumbed to injuries on the way to a hospital.

The Coimbatore east traffic investigation wing police have registered a case. Further investigations are on. Traffic was affected on the busy stretch for a few hours due to the mishap.
