Unidentified miscreants beheaded the statue of veteran social reformer and rationalist leader E.V.Ramasamy, also popularly known as Periyar, near Alangudi in Pudukottai district on Tuesday.

This is  the second such incident of vandalising of the Dravidian ideologue in Tamil Nadu in two weeks time.

Police said the head of the statue was found removed and kept beneath the statue, this morning.

On a complaint from the locals, Pudukottai Superintendent of Police S.Selvaraj and senior police officials rushed to the spot and held inquiry.

Senior Revenue officials also rushed to the spot and temporarily fixed the head. A large number of police men were deployed to prevent any backlash.

On March 6, a statue of Periyar was vandalized inside the Thirupathur Municipal Office in Vellore district. Two persons, including a BJP functionary were arrested in this connection.

The incident was reported after BJP National Secretary H.Raja, in a Facebook post, had said, "Who is Lenin? What is his connection to India? Today, Lenin's statue, tomorrow Tamil Nadu's EVR Ramaswami's statue.  The statue of Lenin was removed in Tripura after the party's victory in assembly election in that state.
