Sagar Kavach is a biannual joint coastal security exercise by Indian Navy, Coast Guard, Marine Police, Fisheries Department, Intelligence Bureau and the coastal community.

Participants of the exercise will be divided into two teams, the attack(red) and the defence(blue). The attack team will act as terrorists and will try to infiltrate with dummy weapons and the defence team will be involved in coastal surveillance to neutralise the terrorists and prevent the infiltration. The exercise, in Tamil Nadu coast, commenced at 6 am on Thursday, and will go on till 6 pm on Friday.

According to officials, Sagar Kavach is essential to re-evaluate the existing standard procedure and the preparedness of various security forces like Indian Navy, Coastal Security Group, Indian Coast Guard (ICG), Forest Department, Fisheries and district administration in case of militant tried to enter the state via sea, like the way it happened in Mumbai in the year 2008.

As part of the exercise, security arrangement has been stepped up across the city, including airport, malls and other public places, to thwart the ‘attacks of infiltrators’.
