SHRC quizzes policemen over Usha’s death

The investigation unit of the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Tuesday held an elaborate inquiry with police officers and home guard personnel into the death of Usha, after a traffic police inspector allegedly kicked the two-wheeler of her husband on which she was riding pillion.

The incident had caused a huge uproar with protests erupting in Tiruchy and other places. Following this, the State Human Rights Commission took suo motu cognisance of the incident and sought a report from state government. 

While inspector Kamaraj, who kicked the bike and caused Usha’s death was arrested and denied bail twice, the Human Rights Commission summoned Tiruverumbur DSP Pugazhenthi, the investigating officer of the case, Inspector Shanmugasundaram of BHEL Police Station and the other policemen who were involved in checking for helmetless riders on the day of the incident. 

For the inquiry at the Circuit House here, the DSP, the inspector, Road Safety Inspector Seeralan, head constables (traffic) Shantha Kumar and Suresh, woman police constable (traffic) Sona and home guard Parthiban appeared before the panel. 

Special Officer for Investigation for State Hume Rights Commission DSP N Balakrishna Prabhu conducted the inquiry. He recorded the information provided by the police officers and got a copy of the case file. 

Subsequently, he visited Kamaraj in the Central Prison here and conducted an inquiry. The Commission has decided to call Usha’s husband Raja also for an inquiry. 

Usha (30) had died on March 7 night after Kamaraj kicked the bike on which she was travelling along with her husband Raja from Thanjavur. The inspector had chased the couple after Raja did not stop. 

The incident had created a ruckus at Thuvakudi where a large number of people protested the brutal action of the police and resorted to a road block. Police resorted to lathicharge and arrested some people.
