Hindu outfits back Vel Sangamam, Left slams it
Even while Hindu outfits strongly backed the ‘Vel Sangamam’, a yatra to create awareness on the Tamil roots of the Hindu tradition by highlighting Lord Muruga considered as a Tamil deity for centuries, Left organisations strongly opposed it as an attempt to communalise the atmosphere in the state.

Hindu Makkal Katchi, which held its state executive committee meeting here, passed a resolution supporting the yatra and asked people to welcome the ‘Panguni Uthiravel Rath Yatra’ headed by BJP national secretary H Raja. The party complained that cases had been foisted Hindu outfit cadre who oppose fraudulent religious conversions and their houses had been subjected to petrol bomb attacks. It also urged the government to arrest Dravidar Kazhagam cadre and its breakaway groups which resort to attacks on Brahmins.
The Tamil Nadu Platform for People’s Unity headed by CPM leader Arunan and K Udhayakumar said Hindutva groups embraced Lord Muruga to fan communal hatred as their bid to leverage Lord Ram for the purpose failed in Tamil Nadu.
