In his address at an event in SASTRA, the Governor said, science and technology were the beacon lights for economic prosperity. They enable us to harness resources provided by Nature for the benefit of the mankind.

Reiterating that students have an important role in deciding the course of science and technology in the coming years, Purohit said the ‘Technology Business Incubator’ launched at SASTRA covered two important emerging technologies, ‘3D Printing’ and ‘Internet of Things’ which were a major step in the endeavour to pursue excellence. Purohit pointed out the 3D printing or additive manufacturing has caught the attention of everybody, from school children to researchers, throughout the world. He said India could not afford to lag in this development and more importantly academic institutions of higher learning like SASTRA should take the lead.

The 3D printing market was expected to be worth around $10.8 billion by 2021, including a robust Indian 3D printing market of $79 million, he added. Over the next six years, medical, aerospace and military applications would exhibit promising growth in India’s 3D printing market. “The Internet of Things or IoT is a concept of basically connecting any device with an onand-off switch. This includes everything from mobile phones, coffee makers, washing machines, headphones, lamps, wearable devices and even a jet engine or the drill of an oil rig,” he said.

In Tiruchy, the governor, while addressing students of AIMAN College of Arts and Science for Women, praised the state’s higher education position. He said the dropout rate was extremely low in TN. He added, “Nearly 45 per cent of children who finish school education, pursued higher education.”
