Safety-norm breach claimed three workers in tannery: PCB

A day after three workers were asphyxiated while cleaning a tank at a private tannery on Ambur–Vaniyambadi road, the management has been found to have blatantly disregarded safety norms, including one that prescribed mechanical means to clean the tanks connected to the effluent treatment plant within its premises.

Pollution Control Board officials based in Vellore on Wednesday forwarded a report to its headquarters, highlighting various norms that were flouted by the tannery.

The report has revealed that contrary to rules, which specifically stated that tanks connected to the effluent treatment plant should be cleaned by mechanical means, the tannery had employed manpower which resulted in the death of three persons.

The report to TNPCB headquarters was accompanied by a written communication seeking action against the tannery.

Officials also indicated that Tuesday’s incident seemed to prove that repeated advisories to tanneries in the region on adhering to safety norms failed to ensure compliance by the units.

Umarabad police have registered a case against the tannery management and have started their investigations into the matter.

Meanwhile, Swetha (15), a class 10 student and daughter of Ranganathan, one of the victims, appeared for the English board examination on Wednesday.

Eyewitness reported that it was poignant sight to watch Swetha’s determination to write the exam despite the loss of her father.
