The present bus terminal has been functioning for years within the town and the area’s growth has resulted in heavy traffic congestion around the existing bus stand.

This has resulted in the buses disembarking passengers outside the bus stand adding to their difficulties.

When the officials decided to shift the bus stand to a land reportedly given by a private party, a section of the community led by the TN Towheed Jamath opposed the move citing the distance from the present bus stand and the safety of women travellers.

The Jamath also said that the move would add to the financial burden as the residents have to take autos or other mode of transport to the proposed new bus stand.

One of the alternative suggestions offered by the office-bearers was to shift the police station in that area and use that space for the expansion of the bus stand. However, police officers insisted on the need for their presence in the busy area. Moreover, the officers said that the land where the existing bus terminus is located also belongs to the police department and they wanted the bus stand moved to a new location.

The Vellore district administration is now seized of the matter.
