The fishermen Anand, Velu, Sundaravelu, Ilangovan of Seruthur and Akkaraippettai fishing hamlets left the Nagapattinam fishing harbour on Friday afternoon in a country boat.
They returned to the shores on Saturday morning and claimed that while they were fishing at about 25 nautical miles towards the east of Thopputhurai coastal town near Vedaranyam, 18 people from Sri Lanka came on four fibre boats and surrounded them.
They immediately started attacking them. They even possessed country bombs, they claimed.
They also claimed the Lankan gang snatched their fishing net, marine catch, wireless device and GPS equipment after assaulting them.
Following the attack, the fisherfolk have lodged a complaint with the Coastal Security Group of Nagapattinam.
