It has started gaining popularity and on Friday, the owner of the app signed an MoU with a college here.

The app, according to developer Jeevanadhan Duraisamy, will highlight to the farmers, the prevailing climatic conditions, names and photos of the breeds, details of the owners, news for farmers, veterinary doctors’ advice and address where quality cattle feed would be available.

“The jallikattu protests in Tamil Nadu had re-ignited the importance of Indian livestock breeds. The protests were not just revolutionary but hold great cultural significance to save the revered and famed Indian breeds”, said Jeevanadhan Duraisamy, founder CEO of Climate Smart Technologies (CST) which has developed the app ‘Save Indian Breed’. It is a free app that could help reverse the trend of dwindling buffaloes, cows, sheep and goat breeds.

Jeevanadhan said the app is designed in an easy way for farmers to collect geotagged photos and videos to locate breeders who still have the prestigious breeds’ germplasm across the country to enable collective conservation and restoration of these indigenous breeds.

While farmers can add their details, upload photos and videos of their cattle for conservation, the public may view these breeds through likes, sharing and support for these farmers. “The app can also be useful for officials of the Indian Council for Agriculture (ICAR), National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), staff and students of state agriculture and veterinary universities for identification of native breeds and understanding the importance to save them,” said Jeevanadhan.

The Dr MS Swaminathan Research Foundation has already signed an MoU to enable farmers to use the app in various agriculture projects.
