Stalin upset over extended time given to Centre for framing Cauvery scheme

He, however, expressed disappointment over the court giving time to the Centre to submit a draft scheme and putting off the hearing to May 3. Speaking to the reporters at Ammapettai, Stalin said that the BJP-led Central Government’s last-minute application was filed with an intention to delay the implementation of the apex court order.

Stalin opined that the Supreme Court on Monday had made it clear that the ‘scheme’ refers to Cauvery Management Board (CMB). Hence, the Tamil Nadu people, who have lost their faith in the Union Government, are dependent solely on the top court alone, he added.

Charging that Karnataka never gave the monthly quota of Cauvery water due to Tamil Nadu, he demanded the Centre to withdraw its petition seeking clarification on ‘scheme’ and work on the constitution of the CMB.

Stalin also pointed out that the Supreme Court’s order indicate that both the Union Government and the State Government have been betraying the interests of the Tamil Nadu people, especially the farmers.

When asked whether, the ‘Cauvery Retrieval Walk’ would continue in the wake of Monday’s development, Stalin claimed that a proper solution still eludes the state and hence, the walk will continue till April 12, followed by a rally to Raj Bhavan in Chennai the

subsequent day. “An all-party meeting will be convened soon to finalise the next course of action on the issue,” he said.

Answering a query on conducting IPL matches in Chennai, the Leader of Opposition said while sportspersons and sports should be encouraged in general, there was no problem if the feelings of people regarding CMB was expressed during the IPL matches.

Earlier, Stalin commenced the third day of his walk from Annappanpettai and passed through the villages of Melattur, Irumputhalai, Saliyamangalam, Arunthavapuram. State CPI secretary R Mutharasan and CPM Polit Bureau Member G Ramakrishnan also participated in the walk.

Meanwhile, the second phase of ‘Cauvery Retrieval Walk’ was flagged off at Ariyalur by Dravidar Kazhagam president K Veeramani on Monday.

Veeramani also termed the apex court’s extension of time given to Centre as disappointing. “It will unnecessarily buy more time for establishing the CMB which is absolutely favourable for the BJP-led Central Government. This protest is not only for the Cauvery rights but for the rights of Tamils and Tamil Nadu,” he said.

In his speech, VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan said, the SC should have pulled up the Centre for not establishing the CMB within the deadline it had given. It has granted more time to frame the scheme and this will ultimately delay the constitution of CMB, he said.
