Jayakumar defends TN absence at FM’s meeting

Reacting to Dairy Minister KT Rajenthra Bhalaji’s remark that the ruling party would show green flags to counter the Opposition’s black flag protest during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit, Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar said that his cabinet colleague might have made it up only to reflect the fact that green refers to agriculture and that it is also part of the Tricolour.

When the Minister was reminded that ‘black’ was also part of the AIADMK’s party flag and asked whether it was alright to show black flags, Jayakumar maintained that black in the party flag reflects the party’s ideology, whereas people consider black as inauspicious.

On not participating in the conference on 15th Finance Commission called for by Kerala, the Minister maintained that the state had already conveyed to the Centre about the ills prevailing in the terms of reference (ToR) for the Commission’s recommendation.

“We have already informed the Centre that the state should not be penalised for effective implementation of population control over the decades and that the recommendations should be based only on 1971 census as against the proposed 2011 census. We have also demanded our due share from devolution of funds and would not give up the rights of the state,” Jayakumar said.

As regards to the IPL match being played in Chennai, the Minister maintained that he personally spoke to the organisers advising them against the match here considering the circumstances surrounding the spate of Cauvery protests.

“We adviced them not to hold the match here, they told us that the event is an all-India one and that the schedule had already been finalised and could not be altered as the arrangements had already been made. Therefore, we have provided the security to the event,” he said.
