The minister along with officials were carrying out an inspection of the site where a new additional building for the collectorate is set to come up at a cost of Rs 20 crore.

After the inspection when both were leaving the collectorate, four women went near their car and poured kerosene over self. When they tried to torch themselves, policemen took the women away and poured water over them.

The women, identified as Lakshmi, Arumugathai, Gandhimathi and Eswari, all relatives, said the Madurai police had arrested their sons, Kavath Thirupathi, Gundumani, Prem and Pandi, working in Kerala and have planned to kill them by encounter.

The women also said that policemen had broken the legs of Kavath Thirupathi and Gundumani and admitted them in Madurai GRH. However, policemen present at the spot said the four-accused had several murder cases pending against them and they were on the run for a few years. The women were taken to Tallakulam police station and were booked for attempting suicide.
