Mass cleaning drive held at 3 major Chola-era temples
In a bid to maintain cleanliness, the Archaeological department officials on Monday organised a mass cleaning campaign in the Brihadeeswara temple (also called as the Big Temple) premises in Thanjavur.

The department also organized a simultaneous cleaning campaign at several other heritage places like Gangai Konda Cholapuram temple Tharasuram Ayrathesehswarar temple. All the three temples are a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, known collectively as the ‘Great Living Chola Temples’.
The officials had roped in students as well as social activists for the cleaning programme, which took place from morning till evening hours. The cleaning campaign will go on till April end.
Officials said that students would be briefed each day with a topic and competitions would also be held. Senior curator Chandra Sekar, temple executives also took part in the campaign.
