Despite the court condemning Tamil Nadu over increasing crimes against women, the state government has failed to take meaningful efforts to curb crimes against women, she said.

“Only if there is a proper government, crime can be brought under control. In fact there is no government at all in Tamil Nadu. The DMK and other opposition parties are holding continuous protests as the AIADMK has miserably failed in its duty,” she said to media, while emerging out of Salem Airport.

Blaming Governor Banwarilal Purohit of overstepping his authority and infringing on the rights of the elected state government, Kanimozhi sought the Centre to call him back.

“Despite opposition from the DMK and other parties, the Governor held review meetings in districts by overruling his constitutional authority. He also constituted a one man commission in a hurried manner to probe into ‘sex for marks’ scandal by asst prof Nirmala Devi, in violation of his official limitations. The Governor had even failed to consider the Supreme Court order that a woman should be made a member of commissions probing such scandals,” she said.

On BJP leader H Raja’s controversial remarks, Kanimozhi said only the BJP should take action against him. Meanwhile, over 200 farmers and local residents, including women met Kanimozhi and sought her intervention to prevent the state government from taking over their land for airport expansion.

They claimed that they would be left jobless, if their fertile farm lands are taken over for airport works. On hearing their grievance, the MP pledged the DMK’s support for their cause and assured to protest with them against acquiring their land.
