According to police, Muhammed Pyaz of Pudur in Karnataka was heading to Ooty for a vacation with eight other relatives, including Saheena Banu, Syed and Sayeela Ahamed, through the Gudalur stretch on a car.
Similarly, a group of friends identified as Unesh, Fazal, Samseer Ali and Rashid, all from Kozhikode, were returning to their hometown in a car.
Police said Rashid, who was driving the car, tried to overtake another vehicle near the shooting point area, when it rammed into the other car coming in the opposite direction. The public rushed the seriously-injured tourists to the Ooty GH on an ambulance. The doctors, on examination, found Samseer Ali had already succumbed to his injuries.
Five others — Unesh and Fazal of Kerala, Muhammed Pyaz, Saheena Banu and Syed — suffered injuries and were undergoing treatment. Traffic was disrupted for a while due to the mishap.
