DMK MLAs furious as officials fail to extend invites
The ruling dispensation’s practice of not inviting opposition MLAs for official functions erupted into an open quarrel at two different government functions in Vellore on Friday.

In the function got up to honour Commonwealth games gold medalist S Satish Kumar at the Nethaji stadium, Vellore DMK MLA P Karthikeyan demanded to know why he was not invited for the official function in his constituency as the government protocol demanded. On seeing the MLA’s fury, his party men also started arguing in his support much to the chagrin of the function organisers.
Commercial Taxes Minister KC Veeramani, who was the chief guest, tried to pacify him stating that he would not have been invited as the officials did not expect him to attend the function.
Meanwhile, in another government function, Health Minister C Vijaya Baskar, who got up to inaugurate a breast milk bank at the Government Medical College Hospital at Adukkamparai, was taken aback when Anaicut DMK MLA AP Nandakumar let fly a broadside, when he was called upon to talk, stating that he was informed of the function only a few hours earlier. “We are being wantonly sidelined because we are opposition MLAs” he charged.
Though Nandakumar and Karthikeyan clambered onto the stage before the function could start, they were pacified and brought down by officials who then called them by name to come to the stage. While the MLA’s tirade resulted in titters among the audience, it was clear that official protocol was clearly given a go by in government functions.
