A book written by Dr GR Ravindranath, general secretary, Doctors’ Association for Social Equality, on reinstating the rights of medical education in the state, was also released on the occasion by Dr R Elangovan, former principal of the Thanjavur Medical College and a brain surgeon.

Elangovan also inaugurated the conference and gave the special address, according to a media release.

Dr Jesudas, an ENT doctor, and medical students Hariharan, Germain Geoffrey, Janani Tirumurthi and Ajit Kumar received the book from Dr Elangovan.

On the occasion, the students put forth demands for protecting the rights of the medical community. They sought that the central government withdraw the National Medical Commission bill and remove the requirement for compulsory service by young doctors in Primary Health Centres.

They also demanded that the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) not be forced on the students, besides the need for government hospitals to not be privatised.

Over the past few years, the Doctors’ Association for Social Equality has been spearheading several initiatives to fight for the rights of medicos in the state, including the demand for 50 per cent reservation for PG medicos in Tamil Nadu in higher studies.

It has been pushing for the percentage of incentive marks and the percentage of reservation for service doctors to be decided by the state government and for the Medical Council of India (MCI) not to interfere in these matters, among other sensitive issues affecting doctors.
