Addressing reporters, the Minister read out portions of the judgment and said the high court had clearly stated that it had not ordered a CBI probe since it had any doubts over the involvement of top police officials and ministers in the gutkha scam.

The Minister asserted that the CBI probe had been ordered since the case involved several states and one of the states alone could not investigate the case. The verdict is not a victory for the DMK since the party’s plea for a special investigation team to go into the scam had been dismissed, he said.

Jayakumar promised to cooperate with the CBI investigations and would not file appeals against such an inquiry, he said. He also said the state government would not accept the Centre’s plea in the Supreme Court seeking two-week time to file the draft scheme for implementing the Supreme Court order on Cauvery dispute. The Centre’s action is like rubbing salt to injury, he added.
