In the first incident at Pernambut, following alerts on social media about child lifters, three north Indian women, who could talk only in Hindi and Marathi, were caught by the villagers, who demanded to know what they were doing at that late hour at MV Kuppam village. While two women escaped when chased by the crowd, the other identified as Sahana (54) was caught and thrashed by the public.

When Pernambut police intervened, villagers did not allow the woman to be taken away. The surprised cops locked her up in a toilet and then talked to the residents. They finally relented and allowed the cops to take her away while a search is on for the two women who escaped.

In a similar incident at Sedarampattu village near Arni, a 20-year-old north Indian youth, who was found loitering in the area suspiciously, was caught by the residents. They demanded to know what he was up to on Monday morning and handed him over to police. After he was handed over to Kalambur police, the same youth was found loitering in Kamakuru village on Tuesday morning.

Annoyed at this, villagers informed Kalambur police who failed to turn up. They then informed the Arni DSP, who failed to evince much interest in the matter. Enraged at this, residents blocked the Arni Road on Tuesday night in addition to seizing two government buses after which police arrived, pacified the villagers and apprehended the youth.
