Vellore Corporation to auction 300 garbage bins

The Vellore municipal corporation has decided to auction a little more than 300 garbage bins that were recently removed from various residential areas under its jurisdiction, Corporation Commissioner C Vijayakumar told DT Next.

The litter bins were removed from residential areas to ensure that residents segregated garbage in their houses and later disposed it. The segregated garbage would be subsequently collected by motorised three-wheelers and taken to the nearest segregation centre. There are 42 garbage segregation centres at various places across the town.

That the civic body did not do its homework before removing the bins was evident from the fact that in certain pockets like Sarbanamedu, garbage packed in plastic bags was dumped haphazardly till DT Next highlighted the issue. The civic body then swung into action and worked overtime to clean the area.

As John (58), a resident, said, “They cleaned one area, but ignored an adjacent spot which also faced a similar problem. Ironically, the Corporation workers after removing the garbage from Sarbanamedu dumped it in another location where it turned into a huge pile on the roadside. The garbage stuffed into plastic bags is disposed on the road near a place of worship in the area. The pile of garbage has become a feeding ground for cattle now.”

While the Corporation has decided to auction garbage bins, an unused garbage vehicle and a bin lie at the rear of the Collector’s office and it needs to be seen when these will be removed for the proposed auction.

Training session deferred Corporation

Commissioner C Vijayakumar said, “The plans to conduct a one-day training programme for locals on garbage segregation could not be undertaken due to the proposed visit of President Ram Nath Kovind to Vellore on May 4. We plan to do it after his visit.”
