Elections were scheduled to be held at the PACCS, which has more than 6,000 members from the surrounding villages, on Monday to elect 11 directors. While more than 100 individuals had filed nominations for the polls, the number was reduced to 58 after scrutiny.
A sizeable crowd, which turned up for the elections on Monday, found the PACCS locked and that the polling official who was supposed to conduct the elections has not turned up. After waiting for quite some time, Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) cadres blocked the road demanding the presence of the polling official to conduct the elections in the cooperating society.
On information, police rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the angry cadres and asked them to hand over a petition mentioning their demand to the district officials at Vellore. AMMK cadres asked the police to find out whether the polling official has been abducted to prevent the polls from taking place.
Police are investigating whether the official’s non-appearance was in any way connected to the demand of the Ananthalai coop voters who had demanded a separate polling booth for their locality and had even staged a sit-in demonstration in the PACCS branch office a few days ago.
