Nine killed after speeding car rams onto their vehicle in Perambalur

Nine persons, including three children, died after a car that went out of control jumped the median and rammed their car plying in the opposite direction on Tiruchy–Chennai bypass road near Perambalur in the wee hours of Friday.

Sakthi Saravanan (57), an ex-serviceman and a resident of Perambalur, had been working as a security personnel at a cement factory in Cuddalore. Saravanan was proceeding towards Cuddalore in his car. Around 1 am, Saravanan, who was driving at a high speed, reportedly lost control of his car near the Four Road junction and the vehicle jumped the median and hit a Puducherry-bound car before ramming into another that was coming from Chennai.
In the impact, eight occupants of the car from Chennai died on the spot. The deceased were identified as R Mohan (39) of Tirumalai Nagar in Chinna Kancheepuram, his wife Lakshmi (32), daughters Pavithra (13) and Navitha (10) and son Varadarajan (5), Mohan’s relatives Murali (56), B Mekala (17) and their driver V Prabhakaran (32).
On information, the Perambalur police rushed to the spot and retrieved the bodies. N Boopathi (27), who was badly injured, was rescued from the mangled remains of the car and was sent to the Perambalur Government Hospital. He, however, succumbed on the way to the hospital. The four occupants of the Puducherry-bound car sustained injures.
Meanwhile, Saravanan, who sustained severe multiple injuries, was initially taken to the Perambalur GH, from where he was referred to the Tiruchy GH and later shifted to a private hospital. Initial investigations revealed that the deceased were from two families and were on a trip to Thekkady in Kerala. Perambalur police have registered a case and are investigating.
Collector V Santha, DIG (Tiruchy Range) Lalitha Lakshmi, Perambalur SP Disha Mittal and other government officials visited the spot and conducted an enquiry.
