It’s Madurai, IT Minister confident of AIIMS location
Information Technology Minister M Manikandan had probably ended a long pending speculation about the place selected for setting up the AIIMS multispecialty hospital as he said on Saturday that it would come up in Madurai and it has been finalised by the government.

Addressing reporters after participating in a food safety awareness programme, the Minister said that under ‘Swadesh Darshan Scheme’ Rs 15 crore had been allotted for Rameswaram island and several developmental works are undertaken under the scheme. Rs 4.3 crore had been allotted to refurbish historical structures in Dhanushkodi without affecting their traditional outlook, under the scheme, said the Minister.
He also said that he had received several complaints about temple workers charging excess from devotees who come to take bath in the holy wells present inside Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple, in Rameswaram. Rs 25 should only be collected from the devotees and if there are any more complaints, the temple staff would be suspended, he warned.
He further said that he is taking steps to bring a medical college to Ramanathapuram and like a medical college in Ramanathapuram the AIIMS would be set up in Madurai. “The government had finalised the location of AIIMS,” said Manikandan.
People of Rameswaram island had long been demanding arts college and soon a government arts college in the name of former President APJ Abdul Kalam would be constructed near his memorial in Peikarumbu, added the Minister.
Manikandan rescues mishap victims
IT Minister M Manikandan, received appreciations from public for saving time and sending accident victims to hospital in his own car, in Rameswaram, on Saturday. Despite the best efforts of the Minister three died in the accident.
The Minister was returning from Rameswaram to participate in a function in Madurai and when he neared Ekantha Ramar Temple in Rameswaram there was a road accident in which a car and a tourist van collided head-on. In the accident one woman, Nasira, from Valinokkam, died on the spot. Remaining three from the car sustained grievous injuries and six from the tourist van suffered minor injuries. Manikandan, who saw the accident immediately stopped his car and rushed to help.
He sent the injured to Ramanathapuram GH in his car and in the police escort car that accompanied him. He was present at the spot for 30 minutes overseeing the rescue measures and then went to Ramanathapuram GH to see them. Despite his timely act, Kalidh and Shakila Banu, who travelled in the car died.
