there was heavy rainfall in Kodaikanal and because of it, the level in the water bodies swelled. Similar rainfall was also witnessed in Rat Tail falls area for three hours and because of the rainwater, the flow in a rivulet at Thazhodai in Perumalmalai rose rapidly.

On Saturday evening, when the labourers were returning from work, they tried to cross the swirling rivulet though the water flow was dangerously high. When they tried to make their way through the water with the help of a rope, six of them were washed away in the flash flood. However, four of them were rescued immediately by those at the spot but two could not be saved. The two were identified as Jeyalakshmi (45) and Divya (20) of Pannaikadu.

The Fire and Rescue Department personnel were alerted and they rushed to the spot. They retrieved the body of Jeyalakshmi and it was sent to the Kodaikanal GH for autopsy. The body of Divya could not be found.

As it turned dark and the water level was high, the rescue operation was suspended.

When it resumed on Sunday around 8 am, the body of Divya was found stuck in a tree that had fallen across the rivulet. Her body too was retrieved and sent for autopsy.
