The drilling occurred in the village in the midnight hours on Saturday, which the villagers suspect is the Centre’s move on the hydrocarbon extraction project.

The residents of Nerur village said they found a group of workers monitored by a few officials were digging the ground for borewells. On asking, the officials had reportedly informed them that they had come to conduct a test for extraction of oil.

Soon, the residents passed informed about this the entire village, following which the villagers rushed to the spot and besieged them.

Thereafter, the workers left the spot. Later, after the intervention of the district administration, the residents released the lorries that were used for drilling the ground.

Meanwhile, the district administration on Sunday informed the villagers that the officials had come to test the groundwater level in the Cauvery delta region.

Not satisfied with the explanation, the villagers along with political leaders, submitted a petition on Monday seeking a proper explanation about the test.

They also appealed to the district Collector to stop the activities if they are for the extraction of hydrocarbon.

Despite a clarification from the Collector, the villagers demanded him not to permit any central government agency to drill the ground.
