The overall pass percentage this year was 91.1 % compared to last year’s 92%. Of the total 9.07 lakh students who appeared for the exams through schools, girls had a pass percentage of 94.1% as against 87.7% of the boys.

The School Education Department also announced that it has decided to do away with the long followed practice of ranking students at the State and district levels on the basis of the aggregate of marks secured. Announcing the results, Education Minister KA Sengottaiyan said that a total of 231 students received total marks of above 1,180 of which 181 were girls and 50 boys. According to him, as many as 1,440 scored total marks between 1,126 and 1,150.

He said a total of 8,510 students secured marks in the range of 1,126 to 1,150, while 11,739 secured marks between 1,101-1,125, followed by 71,368 students who secured marks between 1,001 and 1,100.

Subject-wise, the Minister said that the pass percentage in Physics was 94.4% and in Chemistry it was 95.02%, Mathematics (96.19%), Biology (96.34%), Botany (93.96%), Zoology (91.99%), Commerce (90.31%), Accountancy (91.02%), Economics (90.94%), Language (96.85%) and English (96.97%).

Nearly 9.07 lakh students, including private candidates, registered for the exams held between March 1 to April 6. Among the candidates, as many as 8,60,434 appeared for the exams out of which 4,60,255 lakh were girls and 4,00,179 lakh boys.

The Minister also said that 1,907 of the 6,754 schools registered 100% pass percentage. Likewise, of the 2,574 government high schools, 238 secured 100% pass percentage.

In what can be seen as a subtle warning, Sengottaiyan asked private schools not to advertise student’s marks to secure new admissions. “Strict action will be taken against private schools issuing advertisements based on the plus-2 scores,” he added. The Minister also said that those wishing to apply for re-totalling, can submit their applications Thursday onwards. “Those who have failed could appear for re-examination on June 25,” he added.

Upset over results, three commit suicide
Following the announcement of Class 12 results on Wednesday, at least three students, a 17-year-old girl from Vyasarpadi here, another girl student from Kulathur in Thoothukudi district and a 17-year-old girl from Villupuram district, committed suicide, disappointed over the marks they had scored. T Priyanka from Vyasarpadi had secured 819 in commerce group. She was alone in the house when she hanged herself. Muthuselvi from Kulathur committed self-immolation. Her father, Ponpalavesam, a palm labourer had high expectations from his daughter. Since she failed to clear the Commerce and Accountancy papers, she took the extreme step.
The girl from Villupuram district, A Ilamathi, had failed in two subjects. She later jumped into a farm well and died. Meanwhile, at least six other students attempted suicide across the state, including an 18-year-girl from Thousand Lights, who tried to hang herself, but was saved by alert parents.
