P Akila (36), a resident of Manikandam, said she underwent a surgery for severe abdominal pain at the hospital last August, as per the advice of doctors at the MGMGH. She was discharged a few days after the operation. However, the woman developed complications and suffered from excessive menstrual bleeding and pain.
Akila’s family members, who took her to the GH again, were reportedly told that the previous surgery procedure had gone wrong. She then submitted a petition with the district administration seeking action against the team that performed the surgery on her. Since no action was initiated on her petition, Akila approached the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, which ordered the Madurai government hospital to examine the patient. A final report was submitted in the court and the hearing in the case was going on.
In this backdrop, Akila, who developed pain again, approached Dr G Anitha, Dean of the MGMGH, on Wednesday and sought mercy killing to end her agony. The Dean assured Akila of a possible remedy.
