Also figuring in the top are Erode, Tiruppur, Namakkal and Coimbatore districts from the west, and Perambalur from central Tamil Nadu. In contrast, capital Chennai recorded over 90 per cent pass, which, however, was lower than the rural districts. Also, Villupuram with 83.35 per cent recorded the lowest among the 32 districts.

With 97.05 per cent students passing the board examination, Virudhunagar continued to remain the top performing district in the state. This despite the percentage falling marginally when compared to last year. Erode and Tiruppur, which recorded overall pass percentages of 96.3 per cent and 96.18 per cent respectively, were ranked second and third.

A senior Education department official said most students in Virudhunagar and Erode study in residential schools where they are trained continuously. “Schools give special training to the students not only to prepare for exams but also attending it without fear,” the official said.

Chennai registered an overall pass percentage of 93 per cent while neighbouring Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram settled with 87.17 and 87.21 per cent respectively. Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem and Tiruchy also performed well, recording more than 90 per cent pass percentage.

The performance of nine districts in the south have come down this year, the result show. Similar marginal dip in performance was witnessed in other areas too, including Nagapattinam in central TN, Coimbatore, Namakkal and Salem in west, and Tiruvannamalai in north Tamil Nadu.

Though marginal, this reduction showed up on the districts’ ranking: Tiruppur district, for instance, registered a slender increase of 0.13 per cent when compared to the results last year. However, its ranking was catapulted to three from eight. Similarly, Coimbatore’s figures dropped by 0.3 per cent but that number was enough to significantly improve its rank to eight from 10.

Among all the districts, The Nilgiris stood out by improving its show – the pass percentage went up by 1.4 per cent to 90.66 per cent when compared to last year.

Government schools

In Virudhunagar, it was not just the private institutions that managed to put up a good show in the examination. The result show that government schools in Virudhunagar secured an overall pass percentage of 94.26 per cent to come on top of the list. It is followed by Kanniyakumari and Ramanathapuram districts, which recorded pass percentages of 93.98 and 93.90 per cent respectively. Incidentally, Thiruvallur with 73.10 per cent was the worst among the district when it comes to the performance of government schools. Kancheepuram, to, had only 77.04 per cent, the result shows.
