The baby was born to Velammal (25) of Illathupillai Street in Keelapavoor in Tirunelveli district in a private hospital.
Sources said that shortly after the baby was born, he was declared dead by the doctors as he lay motionless and the family began preparations for the burial on the outskirts of the town.
As per the custom of the locality, ear piercing is done as part of the final rites and it was then that the baby cried and left everyone shocked. The baby was immediately rushed to the Tenkasi Government Hospital in an 108 ambulance.
After first aid, the baby was rushed to the Tirunelveli Government Medical College and Hospital as he was a pre-term baby and his weight was way below normal.
The family was all praise for the ambulance driver Chandrasekar who performed first aid on the baby and rushed him to the hospital.
It may be recalled that in October last year, a new-born baby girl presumed ‘dead’ was seen moving suddenly while being taken home and was rushed back to the Dindigul GH for treatment. The doctors had directed the paramedical team to keep the baby under observation in the neo-natal ward. Some hospital staff had informed the relatives that the child was weak and might not live long. So, the relatives had wrapped the baby in a cloth bag and taken it home.
