Participating in the valedictory function, Governor Banwarilal Purohit reiterated on the need to protect the environment and mitigate climate change.
“I had taken up some eco-friendly initiatives to reduce the use of plastic and save power in Raj Bhavan. I have asked households inside to avoid using bottled mineral water to reduce plastic waste. Power bills in Raj Bhavan have now come down by 30 per cent,” he said.
The Governor also invited the public to visit the Raj Bhavan to gain knowledge on the environmentally friendly measures being undertaken. As part of the valedictory function, the tribal communities in Nilgiris performed a dance show. The Governor then distributed prizes. As many as 639 prizes were distributed to participants.
Though hoteliers and lodging house owners said the crowd did not meet expectations due to overcast skies and continuous downpour, officials in the horticulture department maintained that the turnout for the flower show was encouraging.
“The visitors to the annual flower show had definitely increased. The show is a success as tourists poured in braving the rains and damp weather,” said an official of the department.
State Agriculture Minister R Duraikannu spoke on various development measures being done for The Nilgiris district. Flower replicas of Mettur dam, Barbie doll and a selfie spot featuring Mickey Mouse turned out to be the star attraction at the show. There was also a wide range of imported flowers on the display.
