However, his ‘former’ uncle Dhivakaran said that the police, which failed to arrest S Ve Shekher, acted tough against the common man and even went to the extent of killing them, which demonstrated how the government had failed on all fronts.
Speaking to newspersons, AMMK deputy general secretary Dhinakaran said, the police acted cold heartedly against the protesters in Thoothukudi, who were on a peaceful rally, and that they were fired upon like a hunter kills the birds. “The police exhibited their atrocity in Thoothukudi and this shows the state government’s failure,” Dhinakaran said.
He sought a higher compensation to the kin of the victims and claimed that the enquiry commission that has been formed was just an eyewash and there will be no outcome from the commission. He also demanded the formation of an enquiry panel led by a High Court judge. Meanwhile, Dhinakaran ridiculed the comment of AIADMK minister D Jayakumar that the DMK working president had instigated the riot and he referred Jayakumar as a ‘joker’. He demanded to know what the intelligence department was doing when the crowd had gathered for the rally. “The intelligence department has been assigned to follow me,” Dhinakaran added.
In the meantime, Dhinakaran’s ‘former’ uncle Dhivakaran talking to media persons said that the police had executed a barbaric act in Thoothukudi, he said the cops, which had failed to arrest actor S Ve Shekher for his controversial comment against women journalists, had acted swiftly against the protesters. “The district collector and the SP should be suspended and a fair enquiry should be conducted,” Dhivakaran said.
Vasan blames cops for deaths
TMC president G K Vasan on Wednesday reiterated while condemning the police firing incident in Thoothukudi on Tuesday the violence and deaths in firing were mainly because of the failure of the police force and their intelligence wing in taking appropriate and timely action. Speaking to newspersons, Vasan alleged that the state government did not adopt a proper approach to resolve the issues raised by the people of Thoothukudi, who had protesting for 100 days demanding closure of the polluting copper smelter unit.
The TMC president said it was against the democratic principles to resort to firing at protesters without giving them a chance to sort the problem peacefully through talks. The state government and the police failed to act in a just manner during the demonstration, which was called to mark the 100th day of protests against the Sterlite copper unit in Thoothukudi, the TMC leader alleged and added that there was a genuine reason behind the protest that went on for 100 days. The TMC leader also demanded action against the police personnel, who violated the established protocols before resorting to firing. He urged the government to pay a compensation of Rs 50 lakh to the kin of each of the firing victim.
