200 DMK cadre arrested for protests over police action

Members of political parties on Thursday hit the streets in Coimbatore and neighbouring districts protesting against police atrocities during anti-Sterlite protests in Thoothukudi district.

Around 200 DMK workers courted arrest for protesting near the Collector’s office, Cross Cut Road, RK Mill junction in Peelamedu and in front of the Singanallur bus terminus. They raised slogans against the arrest of their party leader MK Stalin in Chennai and against the state-sponsored police killing of innocent public.

In Tirupur district, over 130 DMK workers were arrested for protesting in Kangeyam. Also, 30 members of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) were arrested for protesting near the Gandhi statue in Tirupur. They raised slogans demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami owning responsibility for the Thoothukudi deaths.

Hotels, shops and bakeries downed shutters in areas such as Ganapathy, Saravanampatty, Pappanaickenpalayam, Vadavalli, Thudiyalur and Karumathampatty areas here following a bandh call given by a trader’s body against the police action.

Around 25 students of various colleges gathered in protest at the VOC Park Grounds, the venue of the infamous jallikattu protests expressing solidarity with the anti-Sterlite protests. The police, however, removed them from the spot to avoid mass mobilisation of students. They also barricaded the VOC grounds to prevent entry of people.
