According to the RMC, as Southwest monsoon is about to set in over the next few days and it will result in thunderstorms in parts of Tamil Nadu. The thunderstorm activities would be experienced in the central, southern and western regions, while Chennai would miss out.

However, to the residents’ relief, the temperature in the city could come down by one or two degrees Celsius. “Districts like Tiruchy, Madurai, Namakkal, Erode, Salem and Coimbatore on Wednesday recorded good rains as isolated places witnessed intense thunderstorms late in the evening,” said a duty officer at the RMC.

“Friday to Sunday will be the most active period of thunderstorms in the state, post which the monsoon dynamics will take over. There will be moderate to intense thunderstorms during the afternoon on a daily basis,” said the weatherman. K Srikanth, a weather blogger, said, “With the westerly winds streamlining slowly over the next two to three days, all those places which fall along the trough line where converging winds meet will see moderate to intense thunderstorms during the afternoons or evenings.

As far as Chennai is concerned, the mercury level will be under either 36 or 35 degrees Celsius and the city will just remain a spectator with not much change in the wind pattern to bring rains.” The Nungambakkam and Airport observatories in Chennai recoded 35.6 degrees Celsius temperature on Thursday.

Districts such as Madurai, Dindigul, Tiruchy, Karur, Namakkal, Erode, Salem, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri along with parts of districts like Pudukkottai, Sivanganga, Virudhunagar, Coimbatore and the Nilgiris recorded moderate rains.
