The party said that the questions that are being raised were based on extensive internal research and inputs received from its members through the organ’s whistle blower app, Maiam Whistle.
At the session slated for the debate on the demand for grants, Maiam has raised questions to the state’s Environment and Forests Department. The concerns pertain to the forest fire in Kurangani that left 22 trekkers dead. Maiam has asked for clarification on the government’s stance on trekking and whether thermal sensors have been purchased by the department for detection of forest fires.
The party also requested the government to voice its view on the concerns raised by the proposed coastal zone management plan that has seen opposition from fisherfolk and environmentalists.
Other concerns put forth were regarding the arbitrary nature of evictions carried out alongside banks of rivers in Chennai and efforts to control pollution and improve conservation of water. Queries posed to the state education department include if there is a proposal to appoint an independent body to assess the state of education in government schools in Tamil Nadu.
Maiam requested the government supply details on progress of various schemes such as the setting up of computer centers in schools, distribution of children’s magazines, upgradation of libraries and the supply of sanitary napkins. To the higher education department, Maiam brought up the issue of the process of short listing and appointment of vice-chancellors through independent bodies as there has been recent scandals involving corrupt vice-chancellors.
It also posed the question of what measures were being taken to enhance skills of graduates and ensure employability and availability of jobs.
An appeal was also made to the Union Environment Ministry against the proposed expansion of phase-3 of Kamarajar port that will affect the Ennore Creek by converting wetlands into Industrial real estate.
