Thoothukudi firing: CCTV footage, cases handed over to CBCID
CBCID sleuths began their preliminary investigation in Thoothukudi, on Thursday, to investigate the police firing on May 22. On the same day, Thoothukudi police had booked 5,000 protesters and the cases were handed over to the CBCID as well.

A team of 20 CBCID sleuths headed by SP, Praveen Kumar, carried out the preliminary investigation. DSP, Anil Kumar, and inspector, Ulagarani, who were also part of the team investigated the case in various parts of the town.
They visited Thoothukudi Police station where the cases were filed which were then handed over to them. They also collected the CCTV footage which were under the possession of the police and then went to the control room near the south police station. They also checked the CCTV cameras located in various spots of the town and inquired with the police about the functioning of CCTV cameras.
Five thousand protesters were booked on a single day for participating in the protest. The cases were booked at Thoothukudi South and at SIPCOT police stations. A total of, 11,500 protesters were booked in connection to the May 22 violence.
Commemorating the 100th day of protest in Kumareddiyapuram village, near Sterlite Copper, a mass protest was organised on May 22 in which protesters turned violent when they were caned by the policemen and when violence went out of control police opened firing on the protesters in which 13 persons had died. When the incident created furore across the state the DGP shifted the case to CBCID.
