Though the kin of the deceased and residents of Kachanatham had earlier refused to receive the bodies and staged a protest, the situation eased after they accepted the bodies. Subsequently, they took the bodies in procession from Madurai to Kachanatham. The residents of Kachanatham were taken to their village in three private buses.
Also political leaders, including VCK’s Thol Tirumavalavan, film directors Bharathiraja, Seeman and Vetrimaran were present while the bodies were handed over to the family members. They too accompanied the residents of Kachanatham to the village and participated in the final rites of the deceased.
Tirumavalavan demanded Rs 1 crore compensation for the deceased and Rs 10 lakh for those injured in the caste clash.
In the clash on Monday night, 38 Dalit families were attacked by caste Hindus. In the attack, properties of Dalits were vandalised and eight Dalits were attacked brutally. Two of them died on the spot, while a third person succumbed to injuries in the Madurai GRH on Thursday.
