The team of MPs led by chairperson Pinaki Misra held discussion and review meetings with Collector K Veera Raghav Rao and Corporation Commissioner S Aneesh Sekhar. During the meeting, the local officials provided detailed documents on various schemes implemented in Madurai and the funds spent for the projects.

In the evening, Pinaki Misra, while addressing the media, said, in the last four years, though the committee had conducted inspections in various cities, the kind of systematic progress that has happened in Madurai is probably the most satisfying aspect as far as the implementation of central schemes is concerned.

The Collector and Corporation Commissioner have done good work. Significant progress has been made in central government schemes such as the the Smart City scheme, Swachh Bharat, PM Awas Yojana, AMRUT and so on.

Misra also said that Madurai is a historic city and has great religious and cultural values and it is important that it makes progress along with its values. The progress is on track and though it is a 3,500-year-old city, its future is important, said Misra. He further said that the Smart City project would take time to take off as it is an ambitious project and though Madurai was in the second list, it had caught up in implementation of the scheme, though some of the cities in the first list are lagging.
