According to the police, the burglars broke into the bank around 2 am. “They turned aside the CCTV fixed at the entrance and damaged three other cameras inside the bank branch.

The burglars broke into the cash register and strong rooms but ran out of luck when they attempted to break open the locker as the alarm was triggered,” police said. On hearing the alarm, the locals rushed to the spot after alerting the police.

Sensing trouble, the burglars had fled the spot. Police held inquiries, while fingerprint experts looked for evidence and a sniffer dog was pressed into service.

The public, who gathered in large numbers, heaved a sigh of relief after the bank staff revealed that cash of over Rs 18 lakh and gold jewels were intact in the locker.

There was a power outage at the time of the attempted burglary and the police suspect that the thieves must have had something to do with it.

However, the UPS linked to CCTV in the bank remained functional.

The police found the image of one of the suspects in a camera at the entrance of the bank when they checked the CCTV footage.

Police also recovered an iron rod used by burglars to break in. The Annur police have registered a case and further investigations are on.
